How often should I bathe my dog?
A good rule of thumb is to bathe your dog every 6-8 weeks. Some dogs, like the Miniature Pinscher , only need bathing two times per year! Making sure to use a shampoo made for dogs is important too. Human shampoo (even baby human) may smell good, and may advertise how gentle it is, but it is not pH balanced for a dog’s skin and coat.
Here is a list of tools that can help you with bathing at home:
A bathing tether will help your dog stay in one spot (or at least keep them from jumping out of the tub) and keeping your hands free to suds them up.
A gentle shampoo it important. Bath time can get a little crazy at times! Especially when your dog is learning how to be bathed. A tearless shampoo help to make sure if any soap gets into your pup’s eyes (or yours!) it won’t hurt them.
It is difficult to get your dog completely dry without a velocity dryer so, in lieu of this using a good moisture wicking towel like the one I linked above will help your dog get dry faster.
If your dog starts getting a “funk” and it hasn’t been long since they had their last bath (remember, 6-8 weeks!) give them a spritz of a cologne made for dogs. My personal favorite smells are: BioGroom Crisp Apple, EarthBath Almond Vanilla, and EarthBath Wild Cherry.
